Overview
A web-based calculator app for a Slovenian packaging factory. It gives customers an instant quote for their order, replacing the previous 3–4 day wait.
The biggest challenge was fully understanding the packaging manufacturing process. There are countless product types, each with its own machines, inks, finishes, specialisations, waste, and materials, and all of it had to be reflected in a calculator that needed to be precise: as one of the largest companies in the sector, a single order can run to many tons, so a small calculation error is magnified enormously.
The second challenge was communicating with the technology-department representatives, the people who know the machines and how quotes are actually calculated. With so many variables in play, it was common to have to redo parts that were already programmed because a field in the process had been overlooked, or because one of the thousand Excel sheets hid a misrepresented variable. A clear example: in the bag-manufacturing process, the waste percentage had been defined as if it applied to the roll, but we were later told it was actually per bag unit — details like that forced us to review and reprogram the logic from the ground up.
On top of that came the language barrier: much of the documentation was in Slovenian, a small language, very different from Spanish and hard to translate accurately, which added an extra layer of care so as not to misinterpret any technical parameter.
